5A - Engineers Week 2026
27th Feb 2026
5A designed and tested paper planes of various designs & sizes. We looked up some YouTube clips of people making various designs & even tried to follow along.
We found that:
- Design: Long, narrow, and aerodynamic designs (darts) reduce drag, allowing them to pierce through the air faster.
- Weight: Heavier paper or added weight (like paperclips) provides more momentum and stability, allowing the plane to travel further before losing speed.
- Throw: A strong, direct, and straight launch provides the necessary initial momentum.
- Design: Planes with large wingspans or a "glider" shape create more lift, keeping them airborne for longer periods.
- Weight: Lighter paper helps the plane stay in the air longer.
- Throw: A softer, upward throw allows the plane to glide gently rather than stalling.
